Managing Categories and Product Groups
Introduction
In Turis, organizing products effectively is crucial for ensuring a seamless buyer experience. Categories and Product Groups provide structured ways to group and display products, making it easier for buyers to find what they need. This guide explains what Categories and Product Groups are, how to manage them in Turis, and how to assign products efficiently.
What are Categories
Categories are the primary way to organize products in Turis. They help structure your product catalog by grouping similar items together based on type, use case, or other relevant characteristics. Categories also allow for subcategories, making it possible to create a hierarchy that further refines product organization.
For example, a clothing brand may use "Men’s Apparel" as a main category, with subcategories such as "T-Shirts," "Jeans," and "Jackets."
What are Product Groups
Product Groups can be used to create curated collections of products that are not necessarily structured in a hierarchy like Categories. These groups are useful for promotions, seasonal campaigns, or highlighting featured products.
For instance, a retailer may create a "Spring Collection" Product Group featuring items from different categories but themed around seasonal trends.
Where to Manage Categories and Product Groups in Turis
To manage Categories and Product Groups, navigate to:
- Products > Categories + Product Groups – This is where you can create, edit, and organize Categories and Product Groups.
- Navigation – Allows you to adjust the order and visibility of Categories and Product Groups, alongside with other items, for the buyer's view.
How to Create Categories
You can create Categories in several ways:
- Manually in Products > Categories: Click "Add Category," choose a name, and save.
- Via an individual product in Products > Products: Expand the "Categories*" field and click "Create New Category."
- Bulk Upload via Tools > Bulk Uploader: Select "Products" in the drop-down menu and include Category details in the upload file.
*Please see article about the Bulk Uploader for Products, for more information on how to use this feature.
The order of Categories and Subcategories can be changed by dragging them within the list.
How to Create Subcategories
Subcategories can be added to an existing main Category by clicking the settings wheel next to the Category and selecting "Add Subcategory."
- Multi-layer subcategories: Turis supports multiple levels of subcategories, allowing for deeper organization of products. This is useful for brands with extensive product catalogs.
How to Create Product Groups
You can create Product groups in several ways:
- Manually in Products > Product Groups: Click "Add New Group," choose a name, and save.
- Via an individual product in Products > Products: Expand the "Product Groups" field and click "Create New."
- Bulk Upload via Tools > Bulk Uploader: Select "Products" in the drop-down menu and include Product Group details in the upload file.
*Please see article about the Bulk Uploader for Products, for more information on how to use this feature.
Product Groups can be set as active or inactive in the Status column. They can also be edited using the pen icon or deleted by clicking the trashcan icon.
Difference between managing via using Productsection and Navigation
- Navigation: Controls the order and visibility of all items, including Categories, Subcategories, Product Groups, Pages, External Links, and Preorder Groups. In Navigation you also determines which item appears as the homepage on the buyer’s side.
- Productsection: Used for creating and editing Categories and Product Groups but does not affect their visibility or placement in Navigation in relation to other items.
Assigning Products to Cateogries and Product Groups
Once Categories and Product Groups are created, products can be assigned using different methods:
- Manually on individual product pages – Assign products to a Category or Product Group directly within the product settings.
- Bulk Action – Select multiple products and assign them to a Category or Product Group in one action.
- Bulk Uploader – Upload a file containing product assignments for mass updates.
*Please see article about the Bulk Uploader for Products, for more information on how to use this feature.
A product can be added to multiple categories, subcategories and product groups, however, please note this is only supported when using the manual method for assigning products at the moment.
Categories and Product Groups are essential tools for organizing and displaying products in Turis. While Categories help structure products into logical groups with subcategories, Product Groups allow for flexible, curated collections. Understanding how to create, manage, and assign products effectively ensures a well-organized product catalog and an improved buyer experience.
